Creator content usage rights: what to ask for and what it should cost

A plain guide to usage rights in creator agreements: organic vs paid, duration, whitelisting, raw footage, and how to secure rights without souring the collaboration.

Short answer: usage rights decide what you may legally do with a creator's content after it is delivered. Posting it on your own social needs organic rights. Running it as an ad needs paid usage rights. Running ads through the creator's own handle needs whitelisting permission. Each is a separate grant with its own duration, and the golden rule is simple: agree on rights before the product ships, because rights bought after a post performs always cost more.

The grants, in plain words

Organic rights let you repost to your brand channels. Paid rights let the same video carry ad spend on your accounts. Whitelisting, covered fully in the whitelisting guide, lets your ads run from the creator's identity. Raw footage rights give your editors the unedited material, which matters when one shoot should become several ads. Duration ranges from 30 days to perpetual, and perpetual paid usage is genuinely worth money to a creator, so expect to pay for it and respect it as fair.

What belongs in every agreement

Whether usage is organic, paid or both. How long. Which platforms. Whether the content can be edited. Whether raw files are included. Whether whitelisting access is granted and for what window. In my programs this fits in a short template every creator signs before shipping, and it has never once been the reason a collaboration fell through. Creators walk away from vague brands, not clear ones.

What it costs

For gifted nano collaborations, broad rights are commonly part of the deal, the product is the payment. For paid work, expect rights to add a percentage on top of the content fee, rising with duration and scope. In the Galvier program, Spark and usage rights were secured upfront in every agreement at an average of about 25 euros per asset, which is what made instant amplification possible when videos took off.

The mistake that costs the most

Running ads on content you only had organic rights to. Creators notice, the trust is gone, and the fix is expensive. The cheapest rights you will ever buy are the ones in the first agreement.
